Artist Statement
Fairy tales and mythology are timeless accounts that are deeply embedded in the history of humanity and culture. Though often considered fantasies, and dismissed as children's stories, they can serve as profound metaphors of issues that occur in our realities. The exaggerated and fantastical elements allow them to become narratives of fascination, to be observed, cherished, and reflected upon.
My pieces are modern day fairy tales. Using the motif of the wolf, a re-occuring and foreboding character in many narratives and myths, an exploration of love and sexuality is depicted. There is a fluidity in the nature of the beast, and it appears and disappears, can be donned, and torn away.
However, these tales are hidden. In the exterior of this fantasy, there is a construction, an alluring and fertile environment within which they dwell. It is through this constructed fantasy that one can explore the complications that occur in our day to day life.
